You pull into your garage after a rainstorm and notice water pooling in the middle of the floor instead of running toward the drain. Or worse — the drain is sitting an inch higher than the surrounding concrete, and water is flowing away from it. Either way, something has shifted, and that shift is costing you every time it rains.

What’s Actually Happening Under Your Garage Floor
Here’s the thing — concrete doesn’t sink randomly. There’s always a reason, and in garages, the culprit is almost always soil erosion or compaction beneath the slab. Water infiltration over the years washes away the fine particles that once supported your floor. The soil settles. The concrete follows. Sometimes it’s a slow, gradual process over 10 or 15 years. Sometimes a single bad winter with freeze-thaw cycles can drop a section of your garage floor by an inch or more almost overnight.
The drain itself is typically cast into the concrete at a fixed point. So when the surrounding slab sinks — or when the section directly around the drain settles differently than the rest of the floor — you lose the slope that makes drainage work. What was once a properly graded floor becomes a flat or even reverse-pitched surface that holds water rather than moving it.
So Can Polyurethane Foam Lifting Actually Fix This?
The short answer is yes — with an important caveat about what “fixed” means in this context.
Concrete lifting works by drilling small holes (typically around 5/8 of an inch) through the slab, injecting high-density polyurethane foam underneath, and allowing that foam to expand and fill voids while hydraulically lifting the concrete back toward its original position. The process is precise enough that experienced technicians can raise one section of a floor just a fraction of an inch while leaving an adjacent section untouched.
That level of control is exactly what drain repair situations require. The goal isn’t just to lift the sunken section — it’s to re-establish the correct slope toward the drain. Typically that’s about 1/8 inch of drop per foot of run, though garage floors vary. I’ve seen floors that needed a full inch of lift across a 6-foot span just to get water moving in the right direction again.
The Cases Where It Works Beautifully
If your drain is in the right location and the surrounding concrete has sunk uniformly, concrete lifting is genuinely one of the cleanest solutions available. The foam cures in about 15 minutes, the drill holes get patched, and you’re back to a functional floor the same day. No demolition, no replacement costs running $3,000 to $8,000, no waiting weeks for new concrete to cure.
The approach is especially effective when the slab has sunk at the perimeter of the garage or along a specific panel joint, and the drain — which is usually near the center or front — has remained relatively stable. In that scenario, you’re lifting the outer sections back up to meet the drain elevation, restoring the slope without touching the drain assembly itself.
The Cases Where It Gets More Complicated
Honestly? Sometimes the concrete immediately surrounding the drain is the piece that has sunk, and that changes the equation. If the slab section with the drain pipe running through it has dropped, lifting it requires care to avoid stressing the pipe connection. A reputable contractor will want to understand the drain pipe material, its depth, and how it connects before injecting foam in that immediate zone.
Cast iron and PVC drains handle the pressure of foam injection differently. Cast iron, common in older garages, is rigid and generally tolerates the process well. Flexible PVC can shift slightly, which is usually fine — but it’s worth discussing with your technician before they start drilling.
And look, there’s one scenario where lifting won’t fully solve the problem: if the drain itself has shifted laterally or the grate is now off-center because the entire drain body moved with the soil. That’s less common, but it happens. In those cases, you might need a plumber to reset the drain housing alongside the lifting work.
How We Assess a Garage Floor Drain Problem
A proper evaluation involves more than eyeballing the floor. We look at the elevation change across the entire slab, not just around the drain. We check for void space by sounding the concrete — a hollow knock tells you a lot. We also look at where water entry points are, because if the soil erosion is being fed by a chronic leak (a downspout dumping against the foundation, for instance), lifting the floor without addressing that source just delays the problem.
Photos help, but there’s no substitute for walking the floor in person. The gradient issues that cause drain problems are often subtle enough that you can’t see them in a photograph — but you can feel them underfoot, and a straightedge across the surface tells the full story.
The Hot Take Nobody Wants to Hear
Most homeowners wait too long. A floor that’s dropped 3/4 of an inch is a straightforward lifting job. That same floor at 2.5 inches of settlement, with cracked panels and a buckled drain collar, is a much more involved project — and sometimes the cost-benefit analysis does start to favor replacement at that point. Catching it early, when you first notice water not draining properly, saves you money and keeps the repair options clean.
The 5-year-old who spots the puddle and tells you something’s wrong is smarter than the homeowner who writes it off as “just how the floor is” for another three years.
What to Expect from the Repair Process
For a typical garage floor drain leveling job, the work takes between 1.5 and 3 hours. Drill holes are spaced strategically — usually 4 to 6 holes per affected panel, sometimes more depending on the slab size and void distribution. The foam injection is methodical; a good technician lifts in small increments and checks elevation frequently rather than just pumping foam until something moves.
After the lift, holes are patched with a cement-based filler that’s flush with the surface. The floor is walkable within the hour and ready for vehicle traffic the same day. There’s no curing period the way there is with new concrete.
