Most homeowners brace themselves for days of blocked driveways and caution tape after any kind of concrete work. That’s a fair assumption if you’ve ever dealt with a full concrete pour. But lifted concrete? That’s a completely different story—and honestly, it’s one of the biggest selling points of the process that doesn’t get talked about enough.
Here’s the thing: polyurethane foam injection, which is the method we use at Solid Lifters, cures in roughly 15 minutes. Not 15 hours. Not 15 days. Fifteen minutes.
That’s not a marketing claim. It’s just chemistry.
Why Curing Time Is Almost Irrelevant With Foam Lifting
Traditional mudjacking—the older technique that pumps a cement slurry underneath your slab—does require a longer wait. You’re typically looking at 24 to 48 hours before you’d want to put any real load on it. The slurry needs time to set, and rushing it can compromise the whole repair.
Polyurethane foam is different. The two-component foam expands, fills voids, and begins hardening almost immediately upon injection. By the time the crew packs up their equipment and cleans the drill holes, the foam underneath your slab has already reached the vast majority of its structural strength. I’ve seen customers pull their car back into the driveway before the technician’s truck has even left the street.
That said, there are some nuances worth understanding before you assume you can do anything the moment the job wraps up.
Foot Traffic: Basically Right Away
Walking on a foam-lifted slab is safe within about 15 to 30 minutes of completion. The surface itself hasn’t changed—it’s still the same concrete it was before. What changed is what’s underneath it, and that support material is already doing its job.
If you had a lifted sidewalk or patio repaired in the morning, you could be having people walk across it by lunch. No exaggeration.
Vehicle Traffic: A Slightly Longer Wait (But Not Much)
For driveways or any surface that needs to support the weight of a car or truck, the standard recommendation is to wait about 1 to 2 hours. Not because the foam isn’t cured—it is—but because giving that full cure window a bit of extra margin is just good practice, especially for heavier vehicles.
An average passenger car weighs somewhere between 3,000 and 4,500 pounds. A full-size pickup or SUV pushes past 5,000 pounds easily. The foam can handle it, but there’s no reason to stress a fresh repair unnecessarily when waiting 90 minutes costs you nothing.
For commercial vehicles or anything significantly heavier, a 24-hour wait is a smarter call. That’s not a hard rule—it’s just common sense.
What Actually Affects How Quickly You Can Use the Surface
Temperature and Weather
Cold temperatures slow foam expansion and curing. If a job is done in winter conditions—say, below 40°F—the foam still works, but you might add another 30 minutes to your wait time before loading the slab. Conversely, in hot summer conditions, the reaction actually speeds up slightly.
Rain isn’t a major concern for the foam itself, but wet conditions around the repair site can affect how the drill holes are sealed. Any reputable contractor will address this before leaving.
The Severity of the Original Void
A slab that had significant voids beneath it required more foam to fill those gaps. In rare cases involving large voids under heavy slabs, a slightly more conservative approach to loading makes sense—think 2 to 4 hours rather than the standard 1 hour for vehicle traffic. Your contractor should flag this for you if it applies.
The Condition of the Concrete Itself
Lifting raises a slab. It doesn’t repair cracks running through it. If the concrete has existing structural cracks or significant deterioration, those weak points are still weak points after lifting. The foam did its job, but a slab that’s crumbling isn’t going to hold up to heavy loads regardless of what’s underneath it.
This is actually my unpopular opinion in the concrete repair world: lifting gets oversold as a complete fix. It’s an excellent solution for settled, stable concrete—but it’s not a substitute for replacement when the slab itself is genuinely failing. Know which situation you’re in before you commit to either approach.
The Drill Holes: What to Know
After foam injection, the small drill holes—typically 5/8 of an inch in diameter—are patched with cement. Those patches need the standard concrete curing time to reach full strength, which is closer to 24 to 48 hours. You can absolutely use the surface before then, but avoid parking directly on top of the patches if possible during that first day. It’s a minor thing, but worth mentioning.
Signs Your Repair Held and Is Ready to Use
Beyond the clock, there are a few practical checks worth doing before loading a freshly lifted slab:
- The surface should feel firm and level underfoot—no bounce, no give
- The patch material over drill holes should be flush and solid to the touch
- There shouldn’t be any visible flex in the slab when you press on it near edges
- If the contractor did a water test (checking that joints drain properly), the flow direction should look correct
If anything feels off, call your contractor back before putting a vehicle on it. A reputable company will come back and check their work.
The Honest Bottom Line on Timing
Walk on it in 15 to 30 minutes. Drive on it in 1 to 2 hours. Go back to your normal life the same day—because that’s genuinely what polyurethane foam lifting allows you to do. The whole point of the process is minimal disruption, and the curing timeline is a huge part of that advantage.
Compare that to ripping out and replacing a concrete driveway, which keeps you off the surface for a minimum of 7 days and sometimes up to 28 days for full strength. The time savings alone are reason enough for most people to choose lifting when the slab qualifies.
